Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
A Failure Mode and Effects Analysis is a procedure by which each potential failure mode in a system is analyzed to determine the results or effects thereof on the system and to classify each potential failure mode according to its severity.
Believe it or not, there is a great deal of confusion regarding what constitutes an FMEA. An FMEA does not contain failure mode probabilities. If someone or some standard has defined it that way, they are wrong. SAE ARP4761 got it wrong too! To drive this point home, enable your sound, watch this and mentally substitute "FMEA" for "knife". If you want to know what an FMEA is, contact our help desk.
