Applying EN 50126, EN 50128 and EN 50129 to Existing Systems

The three rail standards:

  • EN 50126 / IEC 62278 (Railway Applications - The Specification And Demonstration Of Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety (RAMS));
  • EN 50128 / IEC 62279 (Railway Applications - Communications, Signaling And Processing Systems - Software For Railway Control And Protection Systems); and
  • EN 50129 (Railway Applications - Communication, Signaling And Processing Systems - Safety Related Electronic Systems For Signaling)

are examples of application sector standards referred to by IEC 61508 (Functional Safety of Electrical/Electronic/ Programmable Electronic Safety-Related Systems). "EN" stands for "European Norm".

Rail systems have been developed and used (legacy systems) in countries (e.g., U.S., Canada) which are not regulated by these standards. In order to market these systems in countries where these standards do apply, one is faced with compliance issues.

Similar to many other standards, how one applies 50126, 50128 and 50129 to legacy systems is not readily apparent. The developer of these legacy systems may be faced with process, documentation, testing, and organization changes to mention just a few. Concepts, such as Safety Integrity Levels (SILs), Safety Cases, ALARP, and ISAs, may be new to these developers.

This webinar describes how to apply these standards to legacy systems.

Insight

Insight, into this area, is based on HCRQ's experience consulting to Canadian and U.S. rail system organizations who wish to target the European market. Our experience includes feedback obtained from a European Safety Authority.
