System Safety Program Plans - The Complete Story
A Presentation by David "Hunter" Levan
This is a comprehensive seminar on System Safety Program Plans.
The SSPP is one of the most important system safety documents. It is the foundation for all system safety analyses and demonstrations. The SSPP describes in detail the tasks and activities of system safety management and system safety engineering required to identify, analyze, and mitigate hazards by reducing their associated risks to acceptable levels throughout the system life cycle.
The approved SSPP provides a formal basis of understanding between the contractor and the customer to ensure that adequate consideration is given to safety during all life cycle phases of the program and to establish a formal, disciplined program to achieve the system safety objectives.
All too often, too little emphasis is placed on this document. Many poorly written SSPPs continue to be produced today. These have been very detrimental to both customer and contractor. Since the SSPP orchestrates the System Safety Program (SSP), a poor SSPP causes an abysmal SSP.
A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing and there are
far too many people who think they know how to write an SSPP.
Want a smile? Enable your sound, watch this and mentally substitute "SSPP" for "knife".
If all you have to guide you is MIL-STD-882 or a DID, you certainly don't have much; in fact it is a joke how little you have.
Fact - easily 80% of the SSPPs that we have seen, throughout our 20+ years of consulting, have had serious flaws and omissions. We have never examined an SSPP which did not require some improvement.
If you are depending on some standard or handbook
for guidance,
"BIG MISTAKE"!
Insight
Insight, into this area, is based on years of experience producing, implementing, and reviewing SSPPs. The key word here is "implementing". How many people have managed an SSP end-to-end? How many SSPs have they managed? We are able to offer you this Webinar based on lessons learned over multiple SSPs.
This webinar provides you with so much insight, it should fulfill most of what you need for both the System Safety Management Plan (SSMP) and the SSPP.
Clients
- Does your contractor's SSPP have gaping holes?
- Just how much are they committing to do?
- Who accepts residual risks?
- Who oversees the overall system safety process?
- What process is followed for change assessment?
DOD, DND, MOD, FRA, FTA, FAA, FDA, NASA - this Webinar is for you!
Contractors
- Are you confident with what your SSPP commits you to doing?
- Are you sure you want to use MIL-STD-882 as a guideline?
- A statement which is improperly worded or open-ended can cause enormous grief!
- Are you interested in knowing what we are teaching your clients?
Management, Corporate Lawyers
- How exposed is your organization?
- How might some of the SSPP statements be interpreted?
- Are there serious errors and omissions?
- What is the ratio between dollars spent now to safeguard you and potentially dollars spent later?
Presenter
David "Hunter" Levan received BSc. and MSc. degrees magna cum laude in electrical engineering. He was awarded scholarships to attend M.I.T. for his PhD.
With 35 years of experience in real-time systems he is famous for his knowledge and experience in system safety and software safety. His experience spans 24 years in defense, aviation, nuclear power, medical device, and rail (light and heavy) system sectors.
Hunter has been teaching system safety and software safety courses for 18 years. Standing ovations are common.
He was the consultant who was brought on board by the manufacturer of the THERAC-25 cancer therapy machine following the accidents in Tyler, Texas. This was to be the first of several forensic analyses of safety-related systems that he conducted.
He has received commendations for his consulting efforts and has appeared on television. He is known for his key note speaking engagements and continues to receive invitations from organizations and interest groups to participate in conferences and to sit on technical committees.
When Hunter speaks, everyone listens.
Schedule
