More About Smith Mountain Lake
Smith Mountain Lake was created to generate electricity, and to help manage water flows
downstream and nearby.
The Blackwater and Roanoke rivers were dammed to form the lake
in a filling process that started September 24, 1963 and ended on March 7, 1966.
Smith Mountain Lake's highest normal water level ("full pond") is 795 feet above sea level.
Smith Mountain Lake's deepest point is about 250 feet, near the dam itself. Its average
depth is 55 feet. Outside of the lake's coves, 80-150 feet is typical.
Swimmers enjoy the lake from May to September.
Many retail stores and services are available around the lake.
Most are located on or near Route 122 (Booker T. Washington Highway), about five miles north and south of Hales Ford bridge.
The Bridgewater Plaza, home to the Bridgewater Marina and The Mouse Trap, is one example.
There are several large supermarkets, dozens of restaurants, a dozen banks, a dozen marinas,
two YMCAs, two libraries, doctors, an urgent care center,
dentists, veterinarians, real estate
brokers, attorneys, and accountants. With the exception of large department stores and
big-box retailers,
you can meet nearly all
of your needs within minutes of the lake. Full-service hospitals, including a regional heart
and trauma center,
are 30-45 minutes away from the lake in Roanoke, Lynchburg, and Rocky Mount.
Do you remember the 1991 comedy "What About Bob" starring Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss?
It was filmed at Smith Mountain Lake,
but they called it Lake Winnipesaukee.
